How to grow Sweetcorn Seeds
Sweetcorn loves warmth and needs plenty of sunlight to grow strong. Sow the seeds directly into the ground once the soil has warmed up to around 16°C, planting them about 2.5 cm deep and 20-30 cm apart in rows. Space the rows at least 75 cm apart to allow enough room for the plants to grow tall. Water the seeds well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season, especially when the plants are flowering.
Sweetcorn plants are tall, so ensure they have plenty of space to grow and are shielded from strong winds if necessary. Once the plants start to produce ears, you'll need to wait about 70-100 days depending on the variety before harvesting, typically when the husks turn brown and the kernels are plump. Gently twist the ears off the stalks, and enjoy your fresh, sweet corn!
Specific to the variety 'Golden Bantam, these plants typically grow to about 1.8-2.4 meters tall and are well-suited for cooler climates, as they have a shorter growing season compared to other sweetcorn varieties, typically maturing in around 75-85 days. This variety is perfect for fresh eating, canning, or freezing, and its sweetness makes it a favorite for grilling, boiling, or enjoying straight from the cob. The Golden Bantam is especially prized for its old-fashioned, full corn flavor, making it a great choice for those who appreciate traditional, non-hybrid varieties.
