How to grow Welsh Onion Ishikura Seeds

Welsh onions are easy to grow. They are cool-season crops, best planted in spring or autumn.

To grow Welsh Onion Ishikura seeds, start by preparing your garden or containers. Welsh onions prefer well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Before planting, loosen the soil and incorporate compost or well-rotted manure.  If soil is slow to drain, plant Welsh onions on mounded or raised beds.

Plant the Ishikura seeds about 1 cm deep, spaced approximately 10-15 cm apart in rows that are about 30-45 cm apart. If using containers, choose a pot that is at least 30 cm deep to accommodate root growth.

Water the seeds thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Welsh onions grow best in full sun, so ensure they receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Germination for Welsh Onion seeds takes approximately 21 days and plants mature after 50-60 days.

Regularly water the plants and apply a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks to support their growth. As the onions develop, thin them if necessary to ensure adequate spacing and reduce competition for nutrients.

Harvest Welsh onions when the bulbs reach the desired size, typically around 2-3 cm in diameter. Gently pull the onions from the soil and trim any excess foliage before storing them in a cool, dry place.
