How to grow Lemon Balm Seeds
Sow lemon balm seeds between late March and May by scattering them on the surface of quality seed compost, then lightly cover with compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator set to 20-25°C or inside a sealed polythene bag. Keep the compost slightly dry, as light is essential for germination, which typically takes up to 21 days.
Once seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them to cooler conditions until they’re ready to be planted outdoors. After the last frost has passed, gradually acclimatize the plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Plant them in full sun, spaced 30 cm apart, in moist, well-drained soil. Lemon balm can thrive in poor soils, but growing it in containers can help control its vigorous growth.
